Sentinel Vision

Sentinel Vision
Automatic inspection system for PELTON runners based on computer vision

Condition monitoring and predictive maintenance are trends that are permeating the entire industrial sector and therefore also the hydro business. With SENTINEL Vision, NG Hydro presents a new approach to component monitoring by automating the inspection of Pelton runners using computer vision.

Automatic image capture

SENTINEL Vision consists of an image acquisition unit installed in the turbine housing. This unit automatically captures images of each Pelton bucket at defined intervals.

High-quality recordings

High-quality images are stored in a central memory or database for further processing.

Interactive User Interface (GUI)

SENTINEL Vision offers a graphical user interface (GUI) for the definition of post-processing parameters and the visual control of the captured images.

Geometric analyses

Geometric assessments can be made on the basis of the recorded images. For example, the actual splitter width, buckets width or wall thickness can be analysed and the progress recorded.

Localisation of damage

SENTINEL Vision enables the projection / display of reference lines of a known bucket profile (Augmented Reality in order to better localise damage.

Customised evaluations

Specialised analyses and evaluations can be carried out depending on the specific needs of the respective customer.
This can be the detection of cavitation damages or a specific geometric evaluation.

  • REPRODUCIBLE – The inspection result is independent of the skills and experience of the expert carrying out the visual inspection. The system always applies the same, clearly defined parameters.
  • UP-TO-DATE – Thanks to the computerised analysis of the images, automated reports can be generated that are always up-to-date and available from any remote location with access to the network.
  • AVAILABILITY – As the system is permanently installed in the housing, it is therefore not necessary to schedule an outage of the group for an inspection and the dispatcher can decide to start the turbine at any time.
  • CLEAR RESULTS – With a permanently installed light source, the lighting is always the same. This reduces misinterpretations due to optical distortions.
  • COST SAVINGS – The reduced need for experts to travel to remote locations can save costs. This is very important for companies that operate internationally.
  • SAVE LABOUR COSTS – There is no need to dismantle the housing or install scaffolding, and no labour costs are incurred for these tasks.
